Hong Kong CNN —At least two people were killed and a crew member was injured on Thursday when a cargo ship rammed into a bridge in southern China, cutting the structure in half, according to Chinese authorities. Dramatic photographs of the aftermath circulating on Chinese social media showed the bridge split in two with the large stricken ship stationary under the structure. Police vessels were also seen at the scene. As of 10 a.m, two people were pulled to safety and three others remain missing, Chinese state news outlet the People’s Daily reported. A rescue operation is ongoing, it said.

CNN —Manila accused Chinese ships of firing water cannons and making “dangerous maneuvers” toward Philippine vessels resupplying a remote military outpost on Friday, in the latest of a string of incidents between the two countries in the disputed South China Sea. The Philippines also claimed that vessels belonging to a Chinese maritime militia were involved in the harassment and that two Philippine boats were subjected to “reckless” and “dangerous” harassment by inflatable boats belonging to the Chinese coast guard. That claim is hotly disputed by China and the two countries have been involved in increasingly frequent run-ins in the highly contested waterway. The Philippine Embassy in Beijing has protested to the Chinese Foreign Ministry over the latest incident. The South China Sea is widely seen as a potential flashpoint for global conflict.

The startup claims its trucks cost about 5% less than traditional options, on top of safety and environmental benefits. A partner at a Chinese semiconductor investment fund has welcomed the U.S. government's ban of certain advanced chip types to be exported to China, describing the move as "great news" which may stimulate a domestic ecosystem. Nvidia's H100 chip, used by AI firms in the U.S., was banned for sale in earlier U.S. government restrictions. Wang said the fund invests in semiconductor companies, including those in the AI training and autonomous vehicle sectors. One AI chip company Yang Cheng has invested in will launch its initial public offering this year, while a Shanghai-based AI chip firm is valued at more than $3 billion, Wang added, though she didn't name the firms. "We believe those kind of upstream chipmakers — they will drive, or they will play the leading role in China, and they will create their own ecosystem," Wang added.

Hong Kong CNN —China and the Philippines on Sunday accused each other of causing collisions in a disputed area of the South China Sea, the latest in a string of maritime confrontations between the two countries that have heightened regional tensions. In a statement Sunday, the Chinese Coast Guard accused the Philippines of violating international marine law and threatening the navigation safety of Chinese ships. In 2016, an international tribunal in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines in a landmark maritime dispute, which concluded that China has no legal basis to claim historic rights to the bulk of the South China Sea. In September, the Philippine Coast Guard released video of a Filipino diver cutting a Chinese-installed floating barrier in a disputed area of the waterway that had prevented Filipino boats from entering. It came just days after after the Philippine Coast Guard accused China’s maritime militia of turning vast patches of coral near the Palawan island chain into a bleached and broken wasteland.

The CEO of a firm focused on autonomous trucking believes huge change is coming to the sector — with humans and technology working hand in hand to transform the way goods are delivered. Wei said KargoBot was incubated by the Chinese ride-sharing powerhouse Didi for the past three years. KargoBot, he said, already has more than 100 autonomous driving trucks on the road, mainly on routes in Inner Mongolia, northern China. "They have been automatically driving and also, they are delivering goods, they are actually doing commercial operations already." The logistics market, Wei said, is worth more than $1 trillion, with KargoBot focusing on the delivery of raw material for manufacturers and factories.

The cost of decarbonizing the shipping industry will have a knock-on effect on consumers, according to a CEO in the maritime industry. "There will be an inflationary impact coming from [the] decarbonization of shipping … there is no question of it," Bertrand Chen, CEO of the Global Shipping Business Network, told CNBC's East Tech West conference in the Nansha district of Guangzhou, China. New European rules that effectively tax shipping lines for their emissions would push up costs, Chen added. The European Union's Emissions Trading System (ETS) is set to be extended to the shipping industry starting in January 2024, meaning that large ships entering EU ports will be charged for their carbon dioxide emissions. Chen described the EU initiative as "a natural action that will lead to some interesting effects."

CNN —The Philippines has accused Chinese vessels of carrying out “dangerous maneuvers” in a disputed area of the South China Sea in the latest maritime flare-up between the two neighbors. It claimed the Chinese boats “jeopardized” the safety of the crew members aboard the Philippine vessels, but did not detail how. It claimed the incident had involved four Chinese coast guard vessels and four Chinese “maritime militia” boats. Western marine security experts believe Beijing controls a maritime militia hundreds of vessels strong that acts as an unofficial – and officially deniable – force to push its territorial claims both in the South China Sea and beyond. In response to the latest confrontation, the Chinese coast guard issued a statement on Friday, accusing the Philippines of unauthorized entry into the area.
